Thread: Dull Razor

So today I shaved and as I started I noticed that I was having to make more and more passes to cut the hair. This was strange because I had only been one day since my last shave. I finally got fed up with all the pulling and extra nicks I was getting and finished with my old disposable razor. Long story short I think in my attempt to learn stropping I have rolled my edge a bit. The razor is just not nearly as sharp as the day I received it and shaving has almost gotten harder as I have gone. I strop before every shave, but like i said i think that might be the problem. I have seen improvement in my technique after watching a few videos here on the forum, and i just tried my CrOx and FeOx bulsa strop today to attempt to unroll the edge, but if that doesn't work I need to get it rehoned. I know there are honing services advertised in the classifieds, but I was wondering if there was anyone local to my area that could do it. I am currently attending school near Harrisburg, PA. If not I will send it off, but i thought i would try to go local first.

Might not be a bad idea to lay the strop on the table and lightly strop for a good hundred laps and see if that helps. Remember to keep the blade flat and don't apply pressure. Good luck

While I have been learning, I found this to be the most reliable way for me to keep a good edge. Just keep in mind that the strop folds over, and comes off the table a bit near the end. When rolling the blade over there is a chance that going to the end of the strop could roll the edge.

I just had a request for the process to locating members in North Carolina. Here is my response. I hope it helps others...........

This is not a secret process. It is just buried a bit. Here are the steps........

Member list
Search Members ( Not the Google custom search box but lower on the right side of the screen)
Advanced search
From the search screen you can specify a number of criteria. In your case use the "Location" field and enter Carolina or NC or N.C. or major cities in that state etc
But only enter one at a time. The system will not handle multiple entries.
A list of names will appear next. From the list you need to click on each one and then click on the "about me" tab and look at the location to make sure they are in your search area.
If so then you can send that person a PM or emai (Email is far more effective).
A vast majority of members do not enter a location in their profile.

It is a tedious process but really rewarding when the a group meeting is finally put together.

Thanks for all the replies. I have stropped my razor probably a thousand times in the last day and it shaved much better today. Thanks for all the advice really helped out.

I was having a similar problem. The culprit...my stropping. I do not have a hone so I kept trying to strop with paste on the leather to try and refresh. Two things helped: 1) I also watched some videos about stropping. 2) I used a 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper(This was all I had) with 10 strokes and then went to the paste and then to the leather. I repeated this two times and finished with at least 50 passes on the leather. I shaved this morning with the razor and it was much better. Not there yet, but I have more confidence in my technique.
