Thread: Abraham Leon Sheffield Quarter Hollow

Just grabbed this one off the 'bay.

A. Leon 190 Solly Street Sheffield - cutler. Looks like a shoulderless quarter hollow and about 6-7/8 or so. Scales are nice and look original - nice little (lead?) cap at the end. I've cleaned the blade up a bit so far, but that's it. No jimps.

I found A. Leon in the 1854 Sheffield Post Office directory I posted a little while back, so I figure this one is probably from around that era, although I have no real way to tell whether earlier or later.

Looks like it may be a nice shaver - will hone it up and report back.

Well. Honed it up this morning - took a little work as it's a bit more wedgey than I first gave it credit for, and it is a smiler with uneven width spine (narrower at the heel and toe ends - really needed to give it a good rocking motion on the hones). Plus I'd pretty much removed any bevel it may have had when I sanded it. Took a really nice edge eventually.

Anyway, shaved the head with it this afternoon. Wow! This thing shaves like a sinner on judgment day (as my grandmother used to say)! Smooth and basically BBS first stroke! I'd even say it's better than my Friodur, and I don't make that statement lightly.

One slightly disconcerting thing, and I'm wondering if anyone's had this experience before. At certain angles there was serious stiction to my head - I thought perhaps it was because of the wide-ish bevel and large, open expanses of head. I've felt stiction before when shaving, but never to this degree. Just have to watch the angle with this one I guess.
