    Default My first restoration

OK, after watching everyone else restore blades, I decided it was my turn. I have 17 years experience working with metal, so I figured I could do the blade part OK. I bought a dirty looking D. Peres blade sans scales on the 'bay. Here it is. 11/16 wide.

I needed a block to hold the blade for sanding so I made this from walnut. I routed away most of the top to leave a ridge for the spine and inlaid a pretty powerful ceramic magnet. I used a business card to keep from damaging the blade with the magnet.

Once I started sanding with 180 grit paper, I found the crack. About 1cm from the heel and going about 8mm into the blade. Not to be deterred, I decided to make a shoulderless Peres. Here it is newly modified with the 180 grit sanding 95% finished.

I like it! Hope to be able to restore one myself sometime, but I am living in a cramped apartment right now.

What did you do to the tang? It seems to have a very different color.

It's looking great! What tool did you grind off the cracked portion of the heel? Smooth job. You will have a fine shaver and looker when it is done. I like the beer keg trademark!

It's just reflection due to the different angle. The blade reflected the flash and the tang seems to have reflected the lights above my sink.

I used a stone in the cable handpiece on one of my Dremels. Low speed with cup of ice water next to me. Buzz, buzz, buzz, dip, buzz buzz buzz, dip, etc... Never even let it get warm.
