I already have more shaving soap than I can use in a year... so I guess I've started slipping down the hole already!

    Hello BobH,

Although it's not part of the 7-day set I got, I've attached a pic of another razor I got from eBay, for £6. I've started cleaning it up, and was wondering about the scales. In your opinion, do you think they are ivory? They are very similar in feel to the ones you warned me not to replace, which turned out to be ivory!

    Many thanks,

    Mark.

    Hey Mark

I'm no expert on ivory and would not guess one way or the other from the photo.

Here are some tells that scales could be ivory:

Ivory scales are usually pinned without washers around the pins but not always.
Schreger lines in Ivory scales are not usually uniformly parallel and even spaced.
Ivory scales are usually much thinner than scales made of other material.
Then there is the hoy pin test.

There are several threads in the forum about this subject like this one https://straightrazorpalace.com/razo...ry-scales.html

If I had to guess, I would say that they are not ivory based on the above but I have been known to be wrong too.

I would say the above razor is celluloid. The lines that are made into it to 'emulate' ivory are too perfect, too consistent.
Also the way it is pinned suggests not ivory.
The English made some good, stable Celluloid in their formulas, however.

The Hot Pin Test works, but be sure to do it in a spot that isn't noticed much. But like the others, I agree that the last pic dont look like Ivory.

I'd avoid the hot pin test where celluloid is suspected. Hot water from the tap should get celluloid warm enough to emit the characteristic camphor odour. A red-hot pin could cause celluloid to ignite and it burns very quickly - ask me how I know he said rhetorically

No need to test, it is not Ivory, Celluloid. Feel the Ivory again, then feel the Celluloid, they feel nothing alike, are too thick, pinned with collars and do not look anything like Ivory.

Clean ivory feels silky, almost oily. Once you learn the feel it is easy to tell from plastic or Celluloid.

Looks like a nice razor, the heel needs to be re-shaped to get it to lay flat on the hones. Which accounts for the excessive hone ware on the toe of the spine and the bevel, and the narrow bevel at the heel.
