Really love the color,but I hate working with the material

Today's work.

4 razors, made from 1.2842 again.
All 4 are 8/8. I am getting better at figuring out which order to do things in. For the end result, it doesn't really matter because in the end, everything that is not razor, is gone. But working in the 'right' order makes your work just sooo much easier. I did say they were all 8/8, right? Remember that, because it will be important later on



After making those 4 razors, I lighted up my forge to heat treat them, and after doing that I forged 2 meat choppers. It's been far too long since I forged anything significant, so I made the classic beginner mistake of using my wrist to hit with the hammer instead of my shoulders and upper arms. After I was halfway through the first, my underarm was numb. It's like swinging a sword. Broad strokes do a lot more than flicks of the wrist.

In any case, after a lot of sweating and numbness, I ended up with 2 humpback meat choppers with a monkey tail. I used 3/8 thickness. Drawing out the tang was a long chore. I really must practice more. I left enough meat to grind away my rough finish. For that reason, I also always leave the blade an inch too long. I still have some problems with the toe. It always curls up too much, so if I need to forge a chopper, I leave it too long and cut that part off. I also make it too wide so that I have enough meat to create a good edge.

Atm, they're still a bit too long and wide. Since they are more or less in the right proportion for a big blade, it would be difficult to see just how large they are. That is why I put one of the 8/8 blade in the same picture for reference.

Yes, they look very rough. That's why I left a lot of meat on them, so give myself room for grinding away the things I don't want.

Looks like you might get 9/8 out of the bottom and 8/8 out of the forged one on the top. Love the forged ones Bruno & look forward to seeing them transform.

Actually, the top one is 10/8+ at the narrowest point, and the bottom one is 11/8.
Granted, the spine isn't exactly smooth so I need to take a bit off ot that too, but I should be able to get 9/8 out of the both of them.

Got my work cutout for me after a good day scrounging!

Here are the same 2 choppers, but cleaned up a bit, cut to size, and with the lines being more defined.

The top one is 9/8. Bottom one 10/8





Comment from my wife: are those things actually razors?

those are looking nice bruno. i would love for the tail to be shortened by about 1/4 and the tip to be a bit rounder so long as the blade can be over 2.5"

Was trying for a hamon with 1095, it's there, just don't know how well it will look until I get back to the grinder.

Do Nothing weekend,doing just dumb Chit stuff,made some handles for some of my files.

Here are some of the razors and knives I am currently working on. The knives are 1084, as are two of the razors. The rest of the razors at O-1. They have all been heat treated, but all of the tangs need to be sanded and the blades finish ground. I don't mind the grinding, but I do hate hand sanding!
