Not a bad haul! It's good to see businesses that still provide customer service. Since I started with a straight, I've found the same to be true.
I strop my razor with my eyes closed.

    Hello, Michael:

Good stuff. Congratulations. The razor is sweet and will give you a good taste of shaving with the double edge. I am also glad you received the Gillette "yellows." Well done, my good man.

    Regards,

    Obie

Thanks Obie. An interesting alternative to my straights. I purchased about six straights from ebay (all vintage) and i'm doing reasonably well honing and stropping. I do not, however, have a reference blade that i know to be well honed and stropped. I looked into a Naniwa 12K at about $80 or so and wasn't ready to spend that much right now. I have a nice C-Mon Peter J. Michels that is a real looker and it shaves pretty well; a very "quiet" blade, literally. Maybe i will have it cared for by one of the honemeisters here at SRP sometime soon. Also a Kropp, a Puma52, and a few Wostenholms that seem to have potential among a few others. cheers.

Just finished my first shave with the EJ89 and the Gillette Sharp Edge blade. At first i thought maybe there was something wrong with the shaver or could i have put the blade in wrong....or something? Could not feel any sensation of a blade shearing off my whiskers. Wow! This kinda validated my suspicions that my straights are not shave ready. Close but not quite there yet. Especially when the straights are going AGT. Used the CastleForbes Lime cream and finished with their Cedar Sandalwood AF balm. Hmmm. Got to get the honing and stropping figured out.

    Hello, Michael:

Yes, that Edwin Jagger and the Gillette "yellows" combination produces a sweet shave for me, as well.

If I may suggest, do send one or two of your straight to a honemeister for honing. This way you can use them as a point of reference for your honing. Remember that honing is an art onto itself and that it does require skill. Keep practicing.

Also, the straight will have a different sort of sharpness from the double edge razor. In a way, the two methods of shaving share some characteristics, but they still are different.

    Well done.

    Regards,

    Obie

Michael - nice haul, man! Have fun experimenting with all those blades. Thats truly the fun with DE's.

Obie - I thought I spotted your coveted 7 o'clock yellows I've heard so much about them yet I haven't got around to ordering some yet. I probably still have too many blades to warrant any more...

Congrats on starting your DE journey! Good job on the sample pack, I only bought one type of blades when I started so it took me forever to work through those so I could try different ones.

What did that sampler pack run you? I'm working my way through a package of Derbys right now and am eyeing a sampler of some sort for my next supply of DE blades.
