    Took me sometime to get back to this as I had to get my 1" Thuringian out to try - you are both correct, when I thought I was overhanging both sides I was wrong. Thanks for correcting my error.

    Whilst I agree that a narrow hone is not entirely necessary I would say that it makes a rolling stroke easier - especially for an inexperienced honer.
