It is Chromium Oxide indeed. You can get it in powder, spray, paste or crayon form, and it's usually used on a strop, or on a piece of balasa.

No, the 30k sure isn't necessary for achieving killer edges, I just got my 30k last week and was really happy with what I got from the 16k. But the results off the 30 is just the "little extra"... :)...
