Thread: Purple hone ID

I've come across another vintage hone and I'm not sure what it is. It slurries purple, is harder than my Escher and has a similar smell. It measures 6" x 3" x 5/8". It looks similar to the "Pierre La Lune" in the thread below or possibly a Llyn Melynllyn? It's a wonderful finisher that leaves a crisp smooth edge. It's pictured next to a blue Escher.

It looks like my Llyn Mellynlyn TBH....

Hard to say from the pictures. There are a lot of purple hones that look quite equal. Even the Llyn Melynllyn hones are different in colour and structure.
The LM I got are in general more lavender than purple. The newly available ones are mostly pure lavender color whereas the older ones sometimes have a certain creamy white internal structure.

I tried to take some pictures of different purple hones to show the differences in color, but its difficult. Also of course even in hones of the same kind, the color changes.



The numbers assign the following hones:
1 - older Llyn Melynllyn
2 - new Llyn Melynllyn
3 - Pierre La Lune
4 - Pierre de la Lorraine
5 - Brown Thuringian/ Vosgienne

Both Pierre La Lune and Vosgienne have a certain texture in their color.
Looking at the pictures in your post, I think it would not be a LM. Could be a La Lune or Vosgienne. Both are good finishers but I'am not shure what's your understanding of a crisp - smooth edge.
