There are some real garbage videos out there, but the guys here will guide you in the right direction. Just wait until you stumble across the video of the yahoo that is sharpening the razor dry!

I wouldn’t hone dry on a brick. I might add milk like that one video. But because stones have their own unique qualities, some might lend themselves to being used dry. Example: I advocate using the Zulu Grey dry. I use the ZG exclusively dry. Some use water, some oil, etc. It is such a hard, heavy, dense stone water just runs off. Oil works fine. But so does just dry. I use ZG dry to great satisfaction.
A little advice: Don't impede an 80,000 lbs. 18 wheeler tanker carrying hazardous chemicals.

I learned an awful lot about bevel setting from this thread, esp how to tell if it is set:

That is one of the best threads I have seen in part because the pictures are so good.

I didn’t realize you’d already posted that link. Yes the pictures help a great deal. This is where I learned about the Shiny Spots or White Line on the apex of the bevel. When I set a bevel, I think in terms of removing the white line along the whole edge.

What does everyone use for magnification? Was going to buy one of these, but did not know if the magnification was too much? Looking for thoughts before i go wasting money.

Also, will look to get some hands on training after I watch enough training vids. One of the mentors had offered, but want to wait till my knowledge level is up a bit.

60X is my preference. I also have 15X and 30X. 30x is pretty good too, and was my go to until is got my 60X. I have used some greater levels of magnification at meets but they were not what I like.

I use what I believe is the exact same one. I seem to recall ordering them like 10 at a time because they were only a buck or two so cheaper than new batteries. I think maybe it was this one: https://www.amazon.com/Microscope-Ma...ords=60x+loupe

    or this one: https://www.amazon.com/NYKKOLA-Silve...ords=60x+loupe

I find the light element very helpful.
