Yeah, I started shaving with a safety razor many years ago. I learned the hard way about that tightening thing- don't think I'll forget that

I'm sure they can wear out. Seems to take more than one lifetime though (as long as it's not abused).

I have the 1963 Gillette adjustable DE razor and have tried a lot of blades. I get the best shaves, and longest lasting sharpness, from Derby Extra and Astra blades. Wilkinsons are good, but I only get 2 - 3 good shaves from them.

I would recommend trying all types of different blades, since the same DE blade tends to give different people different experiences.

Samplers are the way to go! Everyones face is different so different blades work better for different people!

+1 on this but add the often overlooked DE blades at your local markets.

Here, Walmart, Target even the grocery stores will have DE blades for a fair price,
and no shipping costs... Often the only clue who makes them is the country
of origin and special metal magic... platinum, chrome...

Try them when you find them locally I have been very pleased with most. If you find a good one buy more now.
The mega markets will often switch makers behind their no name blades and in six months
the blades will be better or worse.

Scanning above posts I see brand names that I like a lot. Do keep a score card...
a box with ten different blades takes a while to work through three to five shaves each blade.
It is difficult to compare today's first shave with the last shave of a blade a month or more
ago. Keep a price per shave record. For me the best value blade only gives me three
shaves not the five+ of the more expensive ones. So shaves per blade is not important
to me but cost per shave is. Edit...cost per enjoyable shave.

One difficult to learn skill is knowing too sharp and too dull. I was unhappy with
one brand because after five shaves I hated it. Then I stopped at three shaves
looked at the price per shave and that brand is now higher on my list than other
    notable and famous brand names.

I happen to have four DE razors and each likes a different blade. The most challenging
    testing is with adjustable razors.

I tried a feather today and found the feedback to be...weird, if that makes sense. Anyone else find this?
