Hello,

I have been shaving with a DE razor for a few months and have decided to try a straight razor. Just ordered a Dovo #1226850 'Palisander' 6/8", Herold #155Ri Strop and Herold Linen-Only Strop along with pastes. I have been having a lot of trouble with irritation, especially with multiblade razors, but also with the DE blades. My friend said my problems will be solved with a straight razor. I hope he is right. Anyway, look forward to interacting with all of you on this board.

Welcome to SRP!!

I don't know where you ordered your Dovo from, but be advised you may need to send it out for professional honing, as some of the vendors out there may market a razor as being "shave ready" but in reality it isn't. If you'll post where you purchased from, we should be able to tell you for sure.

As for the irritation, you may want to plan on having some off the cuff as you learn to use a straight. You can minimize it, however, by learning and practicing the techniques outlined here: SRP Wiki

Follow the beginner's guide and you should be shaving comfortably in no time!!

There is a learning curve, but it can be reduced drastically.

You may look into ordering an Alum Bar for razor burn and irritation. I had the same problem with regular razors. Switched to a straight and use an Alum Bar and no irritation or razor burn at all. I'll try and find a link.

Welcome to SRP. Happy to have you aboard.

I concur with Crouton976 and Froghair's advice. Make certain that your Dovo has been honed before shaving and get an alum block to serve as an astringent for your post shave.

As for the pastes...I wouldn't rush to use those right now. You can use them with your linen strop to maintain the sharpness of your razor. However, I would recommend a leather/linen strop for daily use.

One big plus is you should have the prep down.

Welcome aboard. Again, you have received some good advice in the above posts. The only thing I'll add is to take the time to learn how to build a decent lather. Lather and beard prep can make or break a shave. Have fun!

They are cheap as chips on eBay got mine from indiahealthhouse I think, 2 for about 11 bucks, came quick, and were packaged in a plastic container.
