Thread: 5 Shaves in

I just got my 5th shave with shave with a straight today, and already the shaves are much smoother than with the disposable razors i used before. I have had only a minimum of nicks, maybe 3-4 in the 5 shaves, so i am a happy man

Today i had 2 WTG passes, since i haven't started practicing the XTG or ATG passes yet, and had to do no touch up with a disposable. Only area that i'm unhappy about is the left hand side of the chin, but its already got a lot better since i started.

Just wanted to share my happiness, and say thanks for this great side which has been a good introduction to my new hobby

My guess is that very few make it to 5 shaves, so congratulations. The good news is that it gets easier and better from here.

Thank you I was prepared for a bumpy ride, but it has gone a lot better than what i expected when i bought the gear. I really enjoy the whole experience with making lather, stropping and then taking the time to give myself a good smooth shave, and i actually don't think it has been as difficult as i expected it to be

Well, then you're in for a treat. The learning curve is indeed long, but there will come a time when you look back on your fledgling efforts with a smile. If you stick with it, and you certainly seem to be one who will, you will be rewarded by ever-increasing skills and extremely close shaves. It took me a month to get any kind of decent result, but things picked up after that. Now, two and a half years later, I still get better with every shave, can shave much more quickly and effectively, and it is just as much fun, if not more, than when I began. If you need help, just say the word.

Nice to hear of your success JonasH. The good news is that it only gets better, patience is the key and i think you know that netter than i do. As for the chin, dont worry about, in time youll develop your own technique and easily tackle any and all parts of your face.

Thank you all. Yes i would imagine that patience og practice makes it much easier.. I think what also helps me, is to shave when i am not in a hurry. I still need to work on my stropping thou.

I am thinking about getting a hone aswell, but would you guys recommend waiting untill i get better at all other things down first?

I differ from most here who recommend against learning to hone while learning to shave. It is not a problem if you don't attempt to combine the two. All that does is complicate your learning curve. The learning curve is steep enough without having curves in it as well.

If you have a shavable razor, then I would recommend a Naniwa SS 12K to keep it sharp. That and a leather strop should be all you'll need for quite a while.

I have ben looking at the naniwa 12k aswell, and i have a leather strop already. At the moment i have a Klas Törnblom razor i use for my day to day. Then i have an old Böker comming in also. So my plan was to keep getting one of the razor honed by a pro, and then try to keep the other one sharp myself. That way i can compare them to each other, does that sound okay?
