Hey Egg...listen... right now I think the best thing is to really settle for comfortable and clean..by that I mean just do two passes and that should be enough for so that you are not looking scruffy.
No matter what I do...there is no against the grain for me..it just does not happen.
I know that BBS is what we all (well at least most of us want) want...but I resigned when I started that as for right now I just need to get a clean look...
If it is not BBS then I just say ok...I am not killing my face to achieve this..and I have been nick free since about a month in. Could I get closer shaves...yes...is it worth it
to me the answer is no...you decide buddy. I dont want to put this in a wrong spin but for me I just settle for now until it just comes together naturally where I would never even have to think about it.

    Hope it helps.

We all want the bbs. And we can get it if we keep trying. The whole shave has to be looked at. The quality of the blade, sharpness, stropping, preshave, lather, the stretch, and the finish are all equally important IMO to do this right. And nobody has to chop their face up. Im able to get bbs 95% of th3 face and neck with 1 xtg and 1 atg and no irritation. I cant tell you how long I use to do 4 passes and lots of stubble left. How bad do you want it? Don't keep doing the same passes then if they aren't doing it for you. I eliminated the wtg because for me it was useless. I more layer of skin that didn't do anything. Don't be afraid to experiment and know your face. My goal is to get a 95% bbs with 1 atg pass. I believe its definitely possible. And I think I will be there before summer. Good luck gents and keep wacking that stubble!

Wow - you have been nick free for a month and you aren't even tempted to try that third pass just to see?

I might not be alone in this, but at this point in time (shaving with shavette's and "real" straights for 3 months), my 2 pass shaves are more than adequate to pass as clean shaven the next morning at work, and I enjoy the process from start to finish most days without frustration. So to me that 3rd pass seems superfluous. Just my opinion...

And besides, if you cut yourself all up to get that BBS shave and show up to work with scabs and razor burn, can you really call it BBS?

Part of technique is knowing when enough is enough. I'm with you on that.

If I will be really honest do not remember when I nick myself last time. i remember my last cut very well:-)

What help me improve my nick problem was to move away from mirror. Works for me.

Yea, sometimes good enough is just that - good enough.

Yeah I don't Nick myself anymore and have not for a while. I do not even think about the against the grain. My face just can not handle it. Unless I got a blade from someone that was so sharp and so smooth that they could almost guarantee no irritation then I would try it again. But no I don't even attempt it. If I do three passes I go wtg, then xtg, and then xtg again.
But to be honest after my second pass it is enough for me. I got into this for various reasons and getting rid of irritation was one of them.
My beard is very coarse and my skin is sensitive. I just simply reserved to the fact that two is clean and comfortable and I could A third just not against the grain.
That is why I was saying just do enough for clean and comfortable. Anything else might just turn into simple frustration. There are a lot of guys that can get bbs with no problems. I am not one of them...maybe you are not either you know..
    Just something to think about.

+1 on that but you have to be receptive to hearing it.
