Thread: Cheap shaving items/gadgets for newbies

Being a newbie still myself, I thought I would share some things about what I found and bought today from Walmart.

These first two things are more items than gadgets. At Walmart, I found some glycerin. I have been wanting to try my hand at uberlather. A lot of people are always asking where to get it. Well if you have a Wally World near by, go to the aisle with the band aids, rubbing alcohol, peroxide (first aid isle I guess). I got a pretty chubby bottle for $3.99. Also in the shaving section, I found something called the Shave Secret Shaving Oil. Some people on here say it works as a decent pre-shave oil. For $3.89, why not give it a shot?

The two other things I bought were more gadgets. Because the RAD, doesn't let me buy nice shaving mugs, I always have to find substitutes. IMO, a good shaving mug is tall enough to keep lather from being flung out, wide enough to get your hand in and swirl the brush around, but not be too volumous to make lathering difficult. I found a 2-cup measuring cup for $1.97 that fits this description very well. The last thing I bought was quite a neat-cheap find. I've been looking for something to keep my Alum Block in. I found a index card holder plastic box thing for $1.50 that is big enough to fit two small alum blocks. It is clear and has a closing lid. Works perfectly for $1.50.

Just wanted to share this with all the newbies, or anyone else, on a budget. Some of the most useful things are dirt cheap and right under your nose.

It may be so ugly you have to keep it hidden under the sink, but..........for those mornings when you don't trust yourself with a handmade ceramic bowl in a tile lined room; behold the perfectly sized, 3 footed, lipped rim, 89 cent Wal-Mart plastic salsa bowL!

I go to antique stores and thrift stores all the time and find things you can use as a mug, and they have character. An old soup crock, some hand made pottery, candle holders, anything that holds water and is the proper side. All of these I found for under 2 bucks. I went to a good will and found a velvet lined wooden box in great shape for 3.50. Its an awesome display case. I got a pipe rack at another flea market that is perfect for holding 12 razors. Both are full now so its time to go back on the hunt.

I to have picked up a lot at second hand place, I like the nostalgia of it.

I'm still partial to my $5.99 Chinatown soup bowl, pottery of some sort and glazed nicely. The inside is a little rough, helps whip up the lather very well.

Plus if I break it...they have about 200 more in many different styles

I have to admit while I love to feed my RAD,BAD,SAD, ETC the best part is the hunt. It's great going store to antiqur,goodwill,flea market and so on to find what you feel is the perfect mug or display,razor or what have you. And of course sharing it on ere. I actually love the salsa bowl idea as I'm a green freak. I cant wait till sunday as the first Sunday of the month we have a big(for this town)flea market. So lots of goodies to feed the addictions. I totally agree. The hunt is just another part of the experience and adds another level of interest to this art and hobby. I like things with character and that tell a story. I don't do business with Wal Mart, or Chick filet and the like so my options for cheap stuff is kind of limited. Hunting the antique stores and flea markets helps me get stuff on the cheep that I really really like and tells a story.

There is a little Asian shop here in Knoxville that I am hoping I can find some neat little Asian dish to keep my soap in.

Anyone have any nice Asian pottery or wooden containers they use that they picked up for cheap?

You can occasionally find vintage shave mugs mixed into the coffee mugs at thrift stores.

Never looked for glycerin, but Wally World does have a ton of stuff on the cheap.

I love the salsa bowl idea. My wife picked up a collapsible measuring cup/mug in the camping section for me as a travel mug, particularly for camping purposes. That's another option.

I picked up a small hand thrown jar with lid at an antique shop last week for $2, almost the exact same size as my Old Spice shaving mug. A perfect container for my MWF (I never could bring myself to pay the extra $$ for the fancy ceramic container)
