Thread: Looking for my first razor

Hey y'all- I'm looking into getting my first razor. I am a college student so I'm not looking for the finest of the fine. I'm looking for a solid razor that will keep me going for a while and will be great to learn with. Please give me a few options because I have no idea where to begin. I am interested in both the straight edge razors and disposable straight edge razors. Can you give me a few options of what I should buy? It would be greatly appreciated.

I started off with a Bluebeard's Revenge straight with disposable blades, a Mühle badger brush and Edwin Jagger soap (that, honestly, I don't like much, I prefer Mitchell's Wool Fat soap) at a total of €50.

Later on I bought a second hand straight razor of a good brand (see Good Straight Razor Brands - Straight Razor Place Wiki), a new Mühle canvas/leather strop and a coticule, the latter of which I still cannot master for another €120, which could be done a lot cheaper by checking the classifieds and buying used strops/hones. Many people have excellent results with the Norton 4000/8000 or Naniwa 3000/8000, which are pretty expensive, but will last you a lifetime.

Good point of ats200: getting the professionally honed razor. eBay specials that say "shave ready" are NOT shave ready, it's reduced to a marketing term.

I second SRD. BEST vendor I Have ever dealt with as well as vintagebladesllc. They will answer any questions you have before and after the sale. Both sites sell razors that are honed free by the best in the business. I would try a Dovo Best Quality. It will lat you a life time and could be the only razor u will ever need for around 80 bucks. I warn you though, you will wind up getting more!

SRD is awesome and it's where I got my Dovo Best Quality however I caution you if you live outside the U.S. After shipping fees and border fees it really cost me the cost of my razor to get it to me. If your on a budget than I would check out the classified section here at SRP... Just make sure it's honed... Very important.. All the best....
