Thread: Does it ever completely stop stinging when you apply aftershave?

These days I only get minimal burn from most AS, but early on, it was a more regular occurrence. My touch and technique have improved significantly in the intervening months and I have noticed this has a great effect on the amount of burn. If I have a careless shave or use a blade that isn't quite sharp enough, then there is exponentially more sting.

Completely? Nope, but will decrease substantially as you skills improve. As others have said, it's a good test of how well you shaved. I do use alcohol-free and then follow with some kind of moisturizer.

What can I say? I have baby skin and have to pamper it.

A little sting is a good thing - that's the antiseptic effect at work. This is what is working for me:

First, I use a hot shower and/or hot wet towel (2 or 3 times) prior to lather, and maybe even a pre-shave oil.

After shaving, I use a COLD wet towel (2 or 3 times), to close the pores. If it's already stinging, I use an aftershave balm like TOBS Jermyn St. for sensitive skin, non-alcohol based for an analgesic effect. If I've actually used good light technique and a sharp blade, I usually don't have much stinging at all, in which case I might prefer an alcohol-based aftershave for an antiseptic effect and the stronger fragrance, such as the Royall Vetiver I'm using today.

One thing I noticed though, you're using pinaud clubman, and it is going to have some burn regardless, and if you have a bad shave...boy you're gonna know it quick. I would try some AS made with witch hazel, or lower (less than 70%) alcohol content. Proraso AS, speick, and razorock baby blue are good ones that tingel, but only burn a little w/ a not so great shave, but won't "light your a$$ up like a christmas tree if you're off that day." There are some others that are made w/only witchhazel; I think em's place, Shaving Brushes, Men's Wet Shaving, Badger and Boar Bristles Brushes, Razors sells them, I am sure you can google her if this link isn't correct.
