    Default New to SRP

Just bought a Dovo "Carre" Grenadille 6/8" from Straight Razor Designs. First time buying there and I have a couple questions. I noticed the one I received has a smooth spine and others I've seen have squares on them (re: pics attached). Also it looks like when it was honed the spine was run over hone as well (hard to explain). Any help would be appreciated.

The normal way to hone a razor is to have the spine and the edge in contact with the hone. Lifting the spine would cause a set back in the honing process.

The razor was honed ( sharpened ) and you will see a very small flat spot on the spine from honing. Other honing pros will put a piece of 3m black electrical tape on the spine to prevent that small flat spot. And it's a big debate on this forum....TAPE OR NO TAPE...it goes on forever !!!!! Both ways are used. As far as the fancy filed spine vs the smooth spine is a matter of MONEY !!!...it's just that..FANCY..but NiCE.

There is no perceptable wear difference from the way it comes from the factory after the initial honing. Every new Dovo made has a little wear on the side of the spine. The newer TI's seem to have an exceptional amount of wear these days when new from their final grinding.

    Have fun.

There is the answer from the man who honed your razor for you, can't get much better than that.
