What purpose does a strop paste serve?

Are strop pastes an absolute necessity?
Or, not now, but I will i need them in future?

Which one's should i get?

Pasted strops are yet another tool we use to both maintain an edge, and finish a razor honing.
It is nice stuff, but needed? No Sir, not in my opinion.
A good linen and leather stropping after each use/honing is all many of us use, or even feel the need for
