Thread: Mug question

I've been using a bowl to whip up my suds but would like to switch to a mug. I tried a stadard coffee mug but its too deep.

Can anyone suggest a proper height or depth of what a good mug should be? Lots of mugs online but never any measurements given.

Do all mugs have the same diamiter for a standard size soap puck?

I'm confused, are you face lathering or bowl lathering? If it's the latter you would typically have two seperate bowls: a soap dish/bowl and a lathering bowl.

If you face lather, and you are determined to use a mug, an oversized latte mug would be best.

Just to clear things up.

I currenty use Proraso, load up the brush and lather is bowl. But I will retire in January, hitch up the RV and spend a year or two on the road full time.

Its going to be much easier to stop at a Walgreens and pick up a puck of Williams than to have the Proraso shipped out to me. So I want to switch to a mug and puck.

In that case, a puck of Williams is quite small compared to a refill puck from, say, Taylor of Old Bond Street, but since you still need room to swirl your brush the oversized latte mug is still your best bet on a budget. There are also dedicated lather mugs from some of our fine vendors to choose from.

I've never really understood the two bowl thing. Personally, I face lather so I just load up the brush from the bowl the soap is stored in and then build the lather right on my face. I do have a scuttle but I only use it now and then and only to keep the brush warm. If you want a bowl to lather in you can either get one of these oversized coffee mugs or soup mugs from Wally World. They do make dedicated bowls made so the inside is more conducive to lather building. Check out our vendors for those.

Enjoy your retirement. I've been retired for about 10 years now and it's the only way to go.

Easy solution would be to lay in a supply of half a dozen or so Proraso tubes or a few of the commercial sizes ones Proraso Shave Cream 500g Tube . Your routine doesn't change and you use a soap you are familiar with.

I have found that a bowl/mug about 3.5 to 4 inches wide and about 1.5 to 2 inches deep to be a good size to build lather in. The suggested latte mugs or soup bowls with handle come pretty close to that. Also, as has been suggested, one with a rounder concave bottom would also help.

I've been using a Williams puck in an old, thick Navy-issue shipboard generic coffee mug for about 14 or 15 years. I only recently got into SR, but I've used that SAME PUCK and a cheap boar hair brush as a break from shaving cream and to help exfoliate about once a week for a LONG time.

Just for giggles and to help my face endure my learning with this straight razor, I got the SRD Vetiver. It comes formed in a bowl with a lid and no directions, so I just lathered the wet brush right there in the top and then rinse everything off when I'm done.

(2nd bowl??? I have to wonder how many different methods people have figured out through the generations.)
