I have been focusing more on beard prep and letting that process take a little longer and I find that one pass does me well. Because of the way my beard groes I am WTG sideburns and cheeks then below the jawline I am XTG with just a standard pass and I get good enough results that I haven't messed with ATG due to concerns about irritation as well.

Yes I go XTG from mouth to ear to help trim the facial hair lines, but I have chipmunk cheeks and going ear to mouth I can't pull the skin without it bunching up on my cheek bones One time of that blade just stopping and sinking into that cheek was enough to break me. Now...going from mouth to ear, I start at my goatee and mustache only lather half the face, I leave a bare spot to pull back on, then shave half across, rinse, lather the last half grab just in front of my ear and pull back to the back of my head. It works well, but mind where your fingers are...made that mistake on my third shave, never again
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Whatever works for you is the best course of action. Good luck and enjoy your shaves.
