I Just started and I am 14. I think it is a great age to start, because by the time my beard actually comes in, I will have everything I will ever need in my life. Not saying thats what I will end up with....

I wish I had started with a straight when I was twelve instead of all those horrible methods I did use. I already had a lot of sharp pocket knives as I recall then so I don't think it would be out of the question. If you feel the child is responsible and mature enough then go right ahead. Also sometimes giving someone responsibility like an extremely sharp razor can be just what we need at that age.

Usually the biggest impediment to that is the mother. If she is OK with it and he is mature enough then go ahead.

I always wanted a straight razor, even then! However, Mom and Dad didn't think it was a good idea. So I gave up the idea for a while, now that I'm a little older I have finally made the purchase. Anyway, I don't see it being a problem, although I know when I was 13-14 I didn't know how sharp razors really were. After some practice, and a nice talking to, I think it would be just fine. I see it as something similar to a gun. It's a great tool, provided the person using it knows how dangerous they can be when not handled carefully. Same goes with straight razors in my opinion. Would you trust a 13-14 year old to be alone at home with his friends over with access to his brand new 12 Ga.?
I'm not for or against it one way or the other, since it really depends on the individual. It depends on how you feel, and if you think he is ready for something like that. Has he expressed interest in it? If not, it may make an awesome 16th or 18th birthday present. If he has expressed interest, it is obviously something he wants to learn. But then again, he may want to learn, but be excited to just hurry through the quick "safety lesson" and not really learn anything before hand, just to learn everything the hard way. Nothing wrong with that either, I know my dad definitely let me jack up a few times because I'd learn from my mistakes.
Ultimately it comes down to if you think he is ready, since you would be getting it for him (at least that's how I took it).
