Thread: Dull Razor?

Hi, I'm a newbie shaver so I don't know a whole lot. I'm using a dovo best quality 5/8 straight with poraso pre shave cream and a van Der Hagen badger brush and soap. When I got my razor I questioned the sharpness of the blade but I nicked myself several times without applying too much pressure. So in hindsight it was probably shave ready. I am now 13 shaves in and my technique has improved immensely. Unfortunately due to my own clumsiness I inadvertently tapped the blade on my faucet when rinsing. Between the two miniscule chips on my blade and my long road leading to proper stropping, (I have a lot of cuts on my strop) I believe I have dulled my blade. I can now strop halfway decent but I cannot get a close shave. Last night I did four passes (W/G X/G A/G A/G) and I still had stubble on my face. I hate to have to send it in to get it honed after only two weeks. My strop is a filly strop from ruprazor with one side treated with .5 chromium oxide. What should I do?

It's a pain, but best thing to do is send it out. The best way to get chips out, that I'm aware, is to have it honed.

I would get a second razor as a backup while your dovo is being brought back to shave ready. Nice to have a rotation of two or more.

Unless you like pain there is no choice of what you should do. It needs to be honed period. Jimmy is right get a back-up razor or two.

Yes Jimmy is right, you need a couple or 2 more razors as a backup . Dont hit te sink anymore and let your dovo honed.
Look at the classifieds the are a couple budget razors and the fine thing overthere is, the most of them are shave ready.

Well I recently bought a second straight from whippeddog.com. I figured not only would it be a good idea to have a and second razor but also I wanted to see what it shaved like. If it shaved great than I had jacked up my dovo from incorrect stropping. If it also didn't shave good than clearly my lack of skill was the issue (a very good possibility). So when I shaved with my razor from whipped dog, which definitely looked questionable, it was awesome. The hair just popped right off my face. The good news is my shaving skills wasn't the problem, although I do have some areas I need to work on. The bad news is I have to send my three week old razone in to get honed. At first I thought my stropping technique was the culprit for my dull razor and it still might be a contributing factor but I read a post on one of the forums about new razors have a sticker that if unbroken, means it was never honed, merely factory sharpened. My dovo case had such a sticker. So whether it was inexperienced stropping or factory dullness. I still have to get it honed...anyone recommend a good honemeister?

There are a number that hone, check the vendor listings and see if anyone is near you.

With the exception of SRD, I don't think anyone hones the new razors as a standard practice.
