    Default Your opinions please

    Hello all,

I am a complete newbie to the straight razor scene. I have gone through the library and done some research. I may be more confused now than before I started reading about all the different choices. Right now I am just looking for a good first razor. I came across this and it intrigued me (I love the look of damascus steel).

Straight Razor | $100 LS off a Custom Designed Japanese Straight Razor and Shaving Set | StraightRazor.co

So my question is, is this a decent razor and set to start with? If not, what would you recommend?

    Thanks for your time,
    Jason

Jason, here is my "if not", I would recommend you take a look at the classifieds here. I am sure you will find a more than suitable first straight razor and save some $ at the same time. Research some more here and you will find a places to get a great starter strop.
With that you can find out is straight razor shaving is something you want to continue with. Welcome to SRP.

I figured as much. I just love the look of the damascus, but I don't want to waste my money. Thanks for the info.

    Hi Jason,

My opinion is that you start of with a 5/8 size razor and one that has been honed properly or what we call shave ready. I think Bob hit the nail on the head with his suggestion of looking here in the classifieds. You might also check out SRD. You can always move up to the Damascus or perhaps more accurate Pattern Welded Steel, when you have a good handle on things. Like anything else, there is good Damascus and not so good. I would also suggest that you pick up a strop along with your razor so that you have the basics from the gitgo. Just my two cents worth.

    Best Regards Kenny

Thanks Kenny. I am sure you all see this question a million times. I am slowly trying to research this. On other forums I see this question posed a lot and you get quite a few responses pointing you in different directions....but sometimes you see a lot of people pointing you in the same direction. That's what I am hoping to see. Thanks for the response.

If budget is an issue and you don't know whether you will stick with it look at Whippeddog. If your budget can handle a little more SRD has great razors honed by the best and they include a second honing. SRD has a full line of strops and everything else you will need.

Jump in the lather is warm.

Thanks for the advice. I enjoy making pens and I take my time with that hobby as well. Just what I need...another hobby! The wife is always on me for the money spent on penmaking supplies. HAHA. Oh well.
