    Default Minor honing to razor

One of my razors has a few tiny chips in it that had been scratching my face. I would like to attempt to hone them out.

I have a Naniwa 8000 and 12000 grit stones, along with a DMT 325 for lapping. Do the Naniwa's lap in the same fashion as the Norton stones?

Soak the Naniwa's for 15 minutes or so, make the grid with pencil lines, then lap with the DMT? Do two sets of grids for each stone?

Also, should I just work on the 8000 five passes at a time and observe the edge until chips are out?

How many passes on the 12000 for polishing?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

If you have chips a 4K or 1K is the best bet depending on the depth. You can use the 8K but it may take a long time. 5 passes for chips? On the 8K I'd do them 50 at a time. On the 12 K for polishing I'd do 10 passes and test

I'll definitely up the passes. Thanks for the insight. The chips are very small!!! I can barely see the to the naked eye.

Got the chips out with about 80 passes on the 8K and did about 15 on the 12K. Shaved a bit of my face and felt really good. Didn't pass the HHT, but I've never had any of my razors pass the HHT, even honed straight from West Coast Shaving and SRD.

You are moving right along. Congrats

The shave test beats the HHT everytime. My hair fails the HHT with commercial DE blades frequently. When I get my razors to pass HHT I know I am good to go. But I think there is a point yet to be reached where the comfort level of the face/blade connection improves greatly beyond the HHT. Refer to Lynn Abrams honing pyramid.

I have on one occasion removed very small(visible to the naked eye) chips with nothing more than an emory pasted strop. LOTS of work.
