Thread: Just got finished with my first straight razor shave

Well I just finished with my first straight razor shave. Not the closest shave but no cuts!!!! I did end up with some razor burn on my neck. I do have a beard so I didn't have to tackle the chin.

I need some advice on ways to hold the razor when shaving the neck so that I can still see my beard line. I tried to use both hands but it is very awkward.

Congrats, it is fairly hard to get used to using both hands, I know I'm not there. I had started using both hands with my safety razor to get used to it. One thing I figured out the other day is I trace my beard line with my finger after I put the lather on. Also I would say just steer clear of the line itself with a SR until you get more used to it, just clean it up with a safety for now if you need to. Eventually I assume we will get used to figuring out where the tip is and ATG passes will let you see it, but I'm not trying that on my neck just yet.

This may sound silly, but practice might be the best way to get what you're going for. Something that helped me was watching shaving videos on youtube by experts. It seemed to help. Hard to tell experts from everyone else when you start, so I guess do searches using common usernames here. There is a funny one with an English fellah and a lot of booze and cigarettes, but I'm not sure you should follow his technique. He bleeds a lot.

I'm still looking for a vid that highlights beard trimming with the straight... maybe in a few years when I know what I'm doing I can make one lol
