Thread: Newbie wanting to start out

I'm turning 18 next month, and I wanted to start using a Straight Razor to shave; I have used one before, but it was my friend's. I wanted to know what is a name brand/easy to find, starter SR to go with? I'm not looking for the best quality, just the "best" to start off with, as i'm sure i'll mess it up royaly in every way possible.

If you want a _new_ razor, the Dovo "Best Quality" would be a good choice. Get one 5/8" wide, round point. And make sure it's been honed by the seller before you get it.

Straight Razor Designs (who sponsor this website) is a good vendor. There are others.

You'll also need a strop -- a wide variety of prices there, too.

There are always vintage razors available on the "Classifieds" on this website. There are too many "good brands" to list.

If you want "lowest-cost" shaving, try Larry at WhippedDog.com . His razor + strop kits are hard to beat, pricewise. Many satisfied users.

PS -- I object to the term "beginner's razor". Either a razor is properly ground and tempered, and takes a good edge -- or it isn't, and it doesn't.

P.s: By beginner i ment one that would be best for a starter. As i heard a heavier one is better or a dullish one... and one thats old and expected to be messed up due to exp... etc

well srd has some nice razors or if your like me ask your gram all her friends and your paps old army buddies next time you see them if they know of any lying around and get a good vintage one I have an old wade and butcher (W&B) and it shaves great, if you go this route send it off to one of the members for honing. you will also need a strop but you can find one of those in the classifieds or srd or whippedog or anyother shave site. adn then you may want a brush and mug or you may not i perssionaly like canned cream but im one of the few. now this will get you started im not gonna even get into barber hones and other nice things to have at this point if you want more info feel free to pm me and i will walk you thru it as best as i can .
