Default First Straight Razor (plus accessories) Purchase!

Hi everyone - this is my first time every purchasing a straight razor and accessories.

This is the straight razor that I am considering purchasing, which comes with a strop:

Vintage Blades LLC::Straight Razor Sets::Basic Straight Razor Sets::Basic Straight Razor Set - Dovo Ebony "Silver Steel"

I am concerned with the strop being sufficient for my needs - should it last, or should I invest in a more expensive, separate one?

As far as accessories in my mind, I am not overly concerned with buying an expensive brush. Of course I will purchase a bowl and shaving cream, which is a separate topic that I will begin to thoroughly read recommendations on. Is there anything else that anyone can recommend to me? I would greatly appreciate it!

    Welcome to SRP!
That set looks like a winner to me!
your first strop will most likely get mangled a bit anyway, so no worries.
Do take a look at the beginners guide on the frontpage if you haven't done so already, plenty of stellar info in there

Good luck, and do ask away should any questions arise.

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

There are cheaper ways to get into straight shaving, but you're going to spend the money anyway so I'd go ahead and get it. Having a nice razor and strop to begin with will only make things better.

I have a strop from Vintage Blades and it is a quality strop. As long as you don't mangle it too bad it will last longer than you.

I started with a very similar set up from Vintage Blades. I did upgrade to the 3" strop over the 2".

And if you have any questions, just give Jim a call. He will explain everything you'd ever want to know.

Good to know, thanks everyone for your input. I have not had a chance to thoroughly read the beginner's posts yet, but I have read a fair amount of material over the past couple of months.

Welcome to SRP. Looks like a pretty good start to me. It appears it will be shave-ready and be honed by Lynn himself. Probably would be a good idea, to get the dvd to if you've never shaved with a str8 before, or you can rummage around the site or ask any questions you have, which ever you prefer. I'm sure this wont be your first and last str8 razor, and let us know how you like it.
