Thread: Ready to get into this

My father gave me his grandfathers straight razor years ago. I imagine it's at least 70 years old, probably more like 100 since he passed away in the early 50's at 86.

Ever since, I have been fascinated with it and wanted to use it. I had been using Fusions for years and switched over to a safety razor a few months back. Shaving has gone from an annoying chore to a relatively enjoyable event. Due in no small part to fact that I could cut myself pretty good if I wasn't paying attention.

I think I'm ready now to make the jump from safety razor to straight razor. Since I don't want to start off using a family heirloom, I could use some recommendations.

• Is it best to purchase a starter kit or buy the razor, honing stone, soap, etc. individually?

• What is a good brand/model for a first razor?

• Where is a good place to purchase shaving supplies online?

• Anything else I didn't ask.

I didn't but alot of the members here start out with one of the more basic Dovo's, If you buy from Straight razor designs(Lynn abrams store) or from the classifieds I'm pretty sure you'll get it properly honed.

Any particular reason why you don't want to use the razor you have? You could get it honed/restored(if necessary). I wish I had the chance to have a razor with some personal significance.

Thanks a lot. Think I'll give Larry a try. I don't want to use my great grandfathers razor until I know how to strop, hone and care for it properly. I'd like to give it to my son someday.
