Default hello one and all new person here with the obvious question

    Hello all
So if I want to start shaving with a straight razor, where do I get a reasonably priced first razor to try it out

    Cheers

Try buying a shave ready razor from the classifieds section right here on SRP.
If you buy from some online auction or a new knife from the shop, you´ll probably try your first shave with a less than shave ready knife.
Trying to rip your whiskers off with a dull knife could potentially put you off straight razors alltogether, it´s quite frustrating.

The classifieds or one of the vendors advertised here at SRP, everything else is a chance, people around here are prone to protect their reputations. Welcome to SRP.

    Welcome to SRP!

You've been given some good options already, you just have to decide if you want to buy new or vintage. I see you are in Portsmouth; is that Portsmouth in Hampshire, England or in the USA? If in the UK there are also vendors (as well as SRP members) on your side of the Atlantic as well.....

BTW - I like your avatar. I love OSH, but it's just stupidly expensive over here.

Yeah, you can get it over here, you just have to be willing to pay a "premium" price for it. Aside from the usual suspects (Boddingtons, Newcastle) we also get brands like Tetleys, Fullers, Marstons. Our selection of English beers certainly seems to have narrowed over the years, though.

Hmm maybe I'll have to take in Canada on our next trip to Vegas, as we usually tag on another city
Been to Montreal a few times but not seen much in the way of English ales

    Hi and welcome

I myself have just started shaving using a shavette but i do have my first straight razor on order with straightrazorheaven.weebly.com.
He's a great guy and will answer all your questions, he is also in the UK so helps cut down on the postage. Prices are very reasonable mine will come in at £30.00 or under shave ready. I will say i have not recieved my razor yet but have seen photo's and he does come across as extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
If you want i could let you know how the razor is when it arrives?

    Good luck whatever you decide.

There's a lot of information in the beginner's section of the Wiki on this website. I suggest reading it before ordering anything.

You'll need a razor, strop, soap, and brush. Everything else is optional. Soap and brush (in North America) can be picked up at a local pharmacy (chemist?) for reasonable prices.

Classifieds ads on this website are reliable. You could also try Categories -- there's a low-cost "Sight Unseen" option for a razor and strop combination.

One British vendor is The Invisible Edge -- starter kits are here: Shaving Starter Kits

Invisible Edge also has vintage razors, but not _inexpensive_ vintage razors.

Another option is getting a replaceable-blade straight razor -- a Dovo "Shavette" or equivalent. No stropping needed, change the blade when it gets dull. Some people like them, others don't. [I think the cost of a Whipped Dog vintage razor is competitive against a new Shavette.]
