I would recommend a barber hone. You don't really need to worry about setting a bevel and sharpening from that point right now. A barbers hone is not used to create the edge, it is used to maintain the edge.
Whippeddog.com has barbers hones at a very reasonable price, and here is a link to an excellent video of their use.

Awesome. I understand the difference in the barber hone, and will order one ASAP. I will definitely make sure I know as much as I can before I start using it.

How often can you touch up with it? If it maintains, is it something I can use once a week to keep my edge in great shape?

Also, from what I have read and from what you said would I be correct to say that it is beginner safe if I do my homework and that I dont have a high risk of causing serious or permanent damage to my blade?

Thanks, I really appreciate the help!

If you noticed in the video, he used a very light pressure on the blade. The 'pressure' is hardly more than what is required to keep the blade flat on the stone. I usually touch up my razor about every 4-5 weeks, but it has a lot to do with your stropping technique. You will notice that a touchup on the stone is required less often as you develop your stropping technique.

As far as beginner safe, of course it is.
As long as you follow the guidelines described in the video and the wiki. It is not as difficult as you believe, and will be second nature in no time. Serious or permanent damage would require a total disregard of the advice in the video and wiki.
Thousands have done it successfully, and I have every confidence that you can keep your razor in tip-top shape and will enjoy many years of using the str8.

Perfect thanks for the help. As I said, I am going to purchase one ASAP. Because I am ordering online, I will definitely have adequate time to properly research the proper use of the barber hone. I just got a digital camera, so I think I will post a video of my first time honing with it, so keep an eye out for it. I would definitely appreciate some feedback on my technique or corrections to the way I am using it. Also, I will long before that post a video of myself doing a couple passes over my canvas and leather strop, and would appreciate any feedback on my technique. I think I am doing a good job of stropping, but would appreciate any feedback I can get.

Get yourself a cheap and cheerful practice razor with a set bevel.
