Here another tip from another newbie to you, take your time learn to shave, follow the wiki on it, it really works, ive been shaving for a few months with a straight exclusively and i did follow the great info on here and im getting great shaves every time like i never experienced in my entire life. You can have the best honing stones and razors but you really need to learn how to use your
straight razor to shave properly the results are amazing, just my 2 cents

Thanks for all the help guys. I've been doing the short strokes as recommended. I'm about to go try it again here shortly. Hopefully, it gets a little better each time.

Just finished doing another shave and it was a bit better, but still not where it needs to be. I'll try again tomorrow.

Possibly without realising it you have just discovered one of the basics of straight shaving - it gets better the more you practice and the more you learn about your face, beard prep and your razor.
On a slightly different note - as you won't be needing the Shaptons for a while, I think you should send them to me and I'll mind them for you until you need them.....hehehehe......just joking, really (?)

Well, I'm pretty pumped right now! I just finished another shave and had the best result yet. Did not have to finish off with my cartridge razor. I've been searching for people having similar problems and I ended up doing a few things different this time. I took an extra hot shower and put hair conditioner on my face and neck. Then I used a rice cooker to heat several wet hand towels. I think my whiskers are just really tough. I used the first hot towel and then lathered up and used another hot towel and then went to town on it. When it started pulling instead of cutting I grabbed another hot towel and then relathered keeping it moist the whole time and I finally finished after 4 hot towels. I have to finish quickly or it starts to pull and I have to keep using the towels. There has to be a better solution than using that many towels. I want to take my time and enjoy this rather than rushing to finish so it's not uncomfortable. Any suggestions?
