Thread: Quitting after two weeks in.

This forum is full of beginners, learning. The experienced guys don't stick around long. The ratio of beginners to experts can make straight shaving seeeeem difficult.

It really isn't at all.

It's so simple, in basic practice, that it produces these strange RAD, SCAD, BAD, CLAD, acquisition disorders.

Feel free to "quit", whatever that means to you, but also remember that we have a DE section and you are always welcome.

You only need about 10 minutes with a real expert, one who truly gets it, a good razor (sharpened once), a real strop, and a hone to be able to "straight shave".

After that, the hobby becomes self inflicted. You want a better shave, so you spend more time shaving. I've spent more time over the last year ordering a new DE razor over the Internet than I spent maintaining the one razor that I normally shave with.

I also know a lot of guys that visit, post, and socialize with people here, and don't shave with a straight. It's not a requirement, we don't take dues, and you don't have to subscribe.

Remember that being a "member" of this site is like being a friend. You don't have to quit that part.

have you been remembering to let the blades sit for 24 hours between uses? the metal "grows" back to its sharpened state after stropping and if this growing process is interrupted then they will quickly dull.

Was there supposed to be a smiley or some other connotation of humor with this? If not, I'm confused.

I keep mine in line by talking to them after each shave. I tell the what I expect of them the following shave or out comes the strop.
So far, they have been in line waiting for me each day. Gotta get tough on them razors, so they don't get dull and lazy.

I have a 6/8 Full Hollow W&B that I'm resting in the hope it becomes an 8/8+ wedge.

One of the biggest things with straight shaving is beard prep. If you don't do that the quality of the shave is not nearly as good as it could be and the lack of prep with me did dull my razors faster. I to have a very coarse, thick beard. At a minimum you should wet your beard with the hottest water you can stand. Your video of your first shave shows that you do have a natural talent. With just a bit more practice you could be having the best shave of your life every day. I understand how hard it is to fit in a shave with a kid in the picture. Mine is four. He likes to watch me shave sometimes. Sharing shaving time with your son could be relaxed time spent with him and in the process teach him a nearly lost art. And as has been said before, you don't have to break out the straights every day. It could just be a special treat once a week or so. Who knows, it may just make it even more enjoyable for you that way.

Since I've quit, I keep sneaking shaves in with my straight. (I feel so ashamed) It seems I cant quit that easily after all. Is their a Straight Razors Anonymous?

I've not yet tried the two new razors honed by Lynn but the paddle strop seems to have made a difference with my first.. Not razor sharp, but dam sharp.

I'm such a quitter. In this case, it looks like I'll be quitting quitting.

Oh, dude, thats just like crazy. I have the most open door policy on the planet. I'm moving back out to my house in late October, so you should try to stop by sometime. Send me a PM if you'd like or just come out to the "Get Together" in Vienna, VA on Oct. 2nd.

I have no interest in pressuring anyone to shave with a straight razor, but I'd rather you walk away knowing how to do it, and making up your own mind. If nothing else I can teach you enough to be able to get closer shaves with a straight as a nice complement to a DE. That alone is a cool benefit.

And if your a wallflower and interested in dinner I'll make the hike up to Reston. Ya know that cool custom burger joint? I have no problem burning some gas in the name of "Mentorship", the stipend they give to Mentors more than covers it.
