Thread: New guy need of help

dovo best 6/8 was my first shave ready razor n I got them from SRD.
I think Im confident you won't be dissappointed with that razor. to me that razor is absolutely outstanding. now I have 12 razors & dovo best 6/8 is definitly still in my rotation.
if i may suggest you as a newbi to start out with size 6/8 rather than 5/8. The weight of 6/8 kinda help you guide the strokes & the balance.
on the other hand the razors smaller than 6/8 are too light to move around n more likely to get nick.

I bought my first straight razor kit from SRD and was never disappointed. All of their Dovo razors are good and, more importantly, come shave ready! It is the first place I go when looking for shaving products. They have excellent products and service and they will be glad to answer any of your questions.

I would go to the classifieds and buy a 1/2 or 1/4 hollow. The full hollow razors are too hard to shave with starting out, IMHO.

What makes a full hollow difficult to shave with as opposed to a 1/2 or 1/4 hollow?

That is an excellent kit Obie & Patrick suggested. Most of us that have been at this a while recommend a 5/8 or 6/8 hollow or full hollow to start with. Sure you will want to experiment later with other grinds, but that kit is about as good as it comes to get started. At that price it's a steal, especially when it's been honed by THE honemeister & even offers a second honing (about a $20.00 value). Only other thing I would recommend is Lynn's DVD and if I read correctly you would receive a discount on it. Just do it...

I agree 100%! I have a Dovo Best Quality 6/8 and 5/8 in my rotation. My 6/8 is great for when my beard is heavy and I use my 5/8 when it's not so heavy. But I rotate between the two.

If you haven't placed your order yet, let me give you an alternative.

While you can't ever go wrong by doing business with SRD (or most any of the other vendors on here) there is a more cost-conscious option.

1. Buy a good strop. The 3" SRD latigo is a GREAT strop for the money.
2. Buy really good soap or cream. I prefer soap, but it's 100% preference.
3. Go to wal*mart and get the super-cheap $8 boar-hair brush. They suck, but they'll get the job done temporarily.
4. Buy a shave ready vintage off the classifieds. There are a lot of very nice/fancy/collectible razors on there, but there's also usually a good selection of $25-$40 razors that are exellent shavers, but nothing pretty. These are a GREAT place to start. My first straight (not counting some pakistani garbage I bought before I knew better) was from the classifieds here.
