    Default Honing

I have a 4k/8k norton whetstone. When honing I notice a black substance appear on the hone. What is this and should I be concerned?
    thanks.

That is metal abraded by the stone.
You should not be concerned but you need to make sure the surface is cleaned ona regular basis, and also lapped for optimal performance.

The black substance is a good sign, means your stone is working by removing steel from the edge of your razor.

Thanks for the info. What should i use for lapping and do you advise using a slurry stone for the 4k/8k?

sand paper on flat surface is cheapest, but long term you could use DMT 325.
    No slurry is needed IME.

If you choose to use slurry with your norton you could also use the same DMT as Stefan recommended for lapping.
