I love using both straights and DEs. Whether you take a straight or not, I definitely recommend taking a DE. A DE is far easier to maintain in difficult circumstances. In addition to Merkurs, I recommend looking at the Edwin Jagger DE89L and a Gillette adjustable like the Fatboy. A Gillette adjustable certainly gives you more options for changing from a mild to an aggressive shave with one razor.

When I was traveling with the USO in the Far East, the only razor I took was my Gillette Fatboy. It worked beautifully in a wide variety of circumstances.

If you decide on a straight, you could either take a leather strop or you can also find paddle strops. Thiers-Issard makes a great smaller travel paddle strop but it is a little more pricey.

Be careful out there and come home safely!

I appreciate all the inputs. I will be leaving for a float along the Mediterranean. The ship is a carrier of sorts, so it's quite big. Traveling along the Atlantic. Outside of that I can't give you too much more info. I just thought, that perhaps my travel humidor with the sponge replaced with a pack of desiccant might act as the perfect travel case. Any ideas?

Well, it probably would work but what're you gonna put your cigars in? Did you consider an AlembiCase? It seems to be perfect for your situation plus you can bring more than one razor.
Thanks for your service and S/F.

    Hi!!

First, thanks for your service!! My eldest son is in the Army, just recently made Warrant Officer and is now flying Choppers for them. Just back from Iraq last (or before) month. 3 tours under his belt now, 2 as a ground grunt, 1 as a pilot. Looks like he's going to Afghanistan next. He has 6 daughters to take care of now!!

Second, I think your idea is perfect. Your stuff is going to be exposed to some intense salt air, so any drying agent is a must.

Good luck to you man!! Thanks again for keeping America safe!! Truly your efforts are not in vain, and you are appreciated!!!

    Best,

    M

Man I would much rather be on a boat than in the sand, wanna trade? I'll take this deployment for you and you do my next one? I bring straights on all my deployments but I also don't have to worry about keeping mine dry, they generally dry as soon as I walk out the door. Good luck and bring a book.

If you are going to KAF, +100 on the poop smell. See picture two below.

However, It can be strangely beautiful at times. When people aren't trying to kill you.

**edit: I see that you're going to the Med. Even better. Stay away from sand, it sucks.

You are so right on the smell. KAF reeks like rotting poo. That pales in comparison to Kandahar proper-- it is by far the worst smelling place I have ever encountered. It seems to hit you as soon as you enter; Poo, smoke, and smoking poo.
