I fully agree with that.
The principle of just enough is a good one.
If a DFS gives you less irritation and better overall comfort, then that is what one should do. IMO.

Thank you for bringing up that subject, and for thoughts from Craig the Barber.

I never strive for the baby-butt-smooth, because it's not the healthiest way of life for one with a heavy beard and an extremely sensitive skin. I switch around between the straight razor and the double edge — I love both — and try to get the best shave I can without irritating my skin. No, it's not the perfect shave — whatever the perfect shave is supposed to be — but the best for me under the circumstances.

Some gentlemen, especially newcomers, look at BBS as the absolute — it's akin to making the HHT absolute in determining the straight razor's sharpness. I believe that's the wrong way of looking at the world of shaving. What's absolute for one may not be ideal for another. That's why my shave is the best I can get without torturing my skin.

I too have attempted the BBS shave. I am happy to say tha it is achievable, however like Obie said sometimes as smooth as it may be, the irritation may not be worth all the effort. I'm more than fine settling for the DFS. I save the BBS for special occasions and weekends when I have more time to focus on the intricacies of it and enjoyment. Needless to say people are very impressed by the DFS, which is just fine by me. So I say don't focus for the BBS everyday but it still give you something to strive for none the less.

+ 1 to that Obie. I have got really tough stubble along with fairly sensitive skin also and although a BBS shave is nice, trying for it every shave can be a tough ask on the skin.

Interestingly enough I cannot grow a beard even at my age so BBS is good for me to aim at.
Not much irritates my skin either so I think I'm in good shape.

I'm in a similar situation. At 23, my "beard" is not something the be coveted. Last year, when the Blackhawks made the run for the Stanley Cup, I grew out my playoff beard alongside alot of my coworkers. I was a mechanic in the shop for BMW, so I wasn't interacting with customers and it wasn't and issue, but after 3 or 4 months of growth, I looked like a SERIOUS pedophile/serial killer. It was extremely embarrassing.

Thus, I strive for BBS on each shave, but am not disappointed when I can only get DFS. I love the feel, regardless.

Hello fellow shaving aficionados. I wanted to stop by and thank ShaveShak for referencing the Baby Butt Smooth article, and for generating conversation that helps all of us broaden our scope of all things shaving! I must say, Obie mirrors my sentiments exactly with regards to the cost of the shave overall. The bottom line is that since shaving is a part of our everyday lives, our goal should be to make it the least painful experience possible. It’s just not that worth it when you end up suffering with painful irritation on a daily basis when less could be more. Don’t get me wrong, on that special day, you definitely want to try to get as close as you can, but even then there’s a process for prepping your skin to achieve the closest shave possible with the least amount of irritation.

I am a total fan of baby butt smooth or sticky smooth, but the point in the article is very well taken. I know my beard and it has also been conditioned to straight razor shaving from using one daily and it is very very rare that I get any irritation. That said, most guys don't shave with a straight razor or go to the barber every day for a shave, so a nice presentable shave along with the awesome experience should be the primary goal here. Actually a big part of the sport or art for most of us is the great experience which we look forward to daily. The preparation, the brush, the suds, the stropping and the relaxation that comes from not rushing a shave all add to this. I think the barbers that I know do a lot to promote this experience in today's world still and we always learn as much or more from them as they do from us.

I try to get BBS when I shave. I've never had problems with my skin, and I enjoy that faceturbational silky smooth feeling.
