My wife sounded like everyone on that Christmas Story movie - "You'll cut yourself!" instead of "You'll shoot your eye out!". She is a little more comfortable now after my first couple of shaves with no pool of blood on the bathroom floor or missing body parts.

You think you guys have a hard time with people thinking you are off your rocker. Try being a female who uses them lol

I don think I really talk about straight razors that much when I am out and about. At the end of the day it is just personal hygiene....

Can you shave safely with a straight razor ? Yes . Can they be dangerous ? Yes . I remember when I was a noob , and gave myself 2 nasty cuts during the same shave . I almost gave it up that day . It took me a week before I had the courage to try again . The reason I got the cuts was because I wasn't stretching my skin properly , I was using too much pressure , and my blade angle was too high . Do all the research you can , before you put the blade to your face , pay attention to what you're doing , and you'll do fine .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

I can only imagine. My wife's fairly intimidated by the straight, but I bought a Gillette Slim at an antique store and after cleaning it up she said, "I could maybe try one of those." It's sitting in our bathroom waiting. Right now she's 9mos pregnant so it'll probably sit for a while yet.

I can't say as I mention it on a regular basis. It's come up at the lumber yard (I'm looking for wood to replicate a box I inherited so both of my inherited razors have nice homes), the boot store downtown (looking for strop leather locally), and the barber shop (because they mentioned it). I think if I heard a guy randomly talking about how he tweezes between his eyes to prevent uni-brow(or some other personal hygiene issue) that'd seem pretty weird too.

I congradulate you CarrieM!! You had the guts and fortitiude to follow through with what most people would think to be way to risky!!! I love the fact that women are getting involved in Wet - Shaving, great bloody hobby[pun not intended], Mixed feelings about it getting to popular. Prices of E-bay razors are high enough!! Don't you think?
Keep up with the hobby, great job.

Yup, he's definately gone round the bend. Next thing you know he'll be sitting in a rocker on your porch and actually talk to a neighbor! World's going to hell in a handbasket.

My dad understands but my mom thinks I'm crazy. She keeps telling my I'm going to cut myself bad. Coincidentally the only time I've got more than a small nick was when she grabbed me mid stroke.

There was a thread elsewhere here on SRP that talked about Straight Shaver Persecution (or something to that effect). It was a good thread, but this story was pretty interesting to me...particularly since it was old barbers who use a Panasonic Shavette type straight to shave the backs of guys necks. They didn't say anything derogatory, but their reactions were pretty funny.
