I do something similar to Stubear. I normally take a hot shower, and sometimes (not always), I will put conditioner on my beard before getting out. This is just run-of-the-mill hair conditioner that my wife uses, nothing special. If I forget to do this, it's not a big deal.....but every little bit helps.

Also, either while in the shower or once I get out, I will apply a hot towel for a couple minutes.......mainly because it FEELS GREAT, but also helps open my pores. I would definitely do this if I was ever shaving WITHOUT a shower, because I like my face to feel steam cleaned before shaving.

I do all this because, FOR ME PERSONALLY, I like to end my bathroom experience with a nice, clean shave. It smells great, it feels great, and I like leaving my bedroom with the shave being the last thing I do. That's just me. It's always been "shower and shave," not "shave and shower."

I also find that AFTER my last pass, I will use some COOL (not ice cold) water to splash on my face, since sometimes my face can feel almost numb from the smoothness and this cool water is refreshing. After that, I pat dry with a towel, apply aftershave or lotion, and squirt a shot of cologne on the body for that extra "Wow, who's that awesome smelling guy" factor!

I say do what works for you. Some people swear that shaving before a shower works for them. Others can't stand it. Some prefer hot water, while others like cold. If it feels good and it's enjoyable, do it! That's my motto!

Just wondering how do you make the hot towel, at my local Indian restaurant they give you damp hot towels that are wrapped in plastic but I think they put those in the microwave they sure do feel good on your face after heavy meal but that seems like a lot of hassle every morning. Maybe for special occasions when you want a really nice shave.

I'm really low maintenance. I just take a hand towel, dunk it in really hot water, ring it out a little bit, and then hold it up to my face & neck until it doesn't feel hot anymore! No microwaves or special towels necessary!

If I'm doing this in the shower, the process still applies. I usually do it right before I get out. I just wet the towel in the shower, apply it wet to my face, and enjoy the feeling before getting out and making my lather at the bathroom sink.
