Thread: Hello!

Hi everyone. I'm interested in the straight razor stuff. I've been shaving with a safety razor and a mug and soap for years. I just got a couple of vintage 1920's Bowdings wedge razors for $5.00 a piece. I figured I would clean them up and learn how to use them. I don't know much of anything about straight razors, so I will cruise through this site and gather info.. I sharpen my own kitchen knives ...I hope I can apply a little of that to this!!!

I am a former meat cutter and I'll tell you flat out that the difference between sharping a knife and a straight razor is BLACK & WHITE! I can 'Sharpen' any of my knives to where they will easily (Shave) arm hair. However, I am still learning how to 'Hone' a straight razor!

I'm pretty sure that others will chime in and tell you this! Send your razor out to be Professionally Honed! The small investment will be paid back 10 fold! If you click on 'Classifieds' here @ SRP,you will then find Members Services. There you will find an assortment of people who will service your razor/razors well. This place has tonnes of information, and lots of friendly people willing to help too. Maybe there's someone in your area who you can meet up with, and they can show you a bit of the ropes?

I'm going to second cudarunner's motion. Get at least one of those blades honed professionally. It will eliminate one variable, and when you start straight shaving, EVERYTHING is a variable....lather, stropping, stretching, shaving, beard prep, etc. Let one variable go on vacation for a while

When you're comfortable with your shaving and it's time hone, you can also send your razors out and have one taken to completely shave ready, and have the other with only a bevel set. Then when they come back, you can sharpen and polish the one, trying to match the other. Just a thought.
