Thread: Barber Shops?

Did not find anything exactly like this, so I thought it might be relevant.

Hub and I live in a rural part of Indiana state in the USA, we were discussing how they used to have old barber shops and such and wondered if there might be any still around. How would we go about finding these rare places, a good starting point in our search seems to be in order so if any one could help nudge us in the right direction to begin our search it would be awesome.

Not exactly what you're looking for but many of the replies include locations of barbershops where people have been able to get shaves.

The barber shop here in Le Mars does straight razor shaves (might be shavette shaves though...I haven't lived here long enough to find out that detail yet...probably will in the next few weeks).

When I'm looking for a barber...not a sport's clips, quick cuts, hack and chop, err whatever, I cruise main street looking for barber polls. Old barber shops tend to be in the old centers of small towns. They were once the hub of gentlemen's get togethers, and that was the place to be. In my experience the smaller and older looking the barbershop the better the service. My best hair cuts have come from guys in their 80's. Their hands shake a little until they get close to your head...then it's like experience takes over. Unfortunately I can't speak to having them hold a blade to your neck as I've not had a professional shave yet. But I plan to test the services of my new town's barber soon.

I got tired of the 'cookie cutter' haircut chain stores with a misleading name like Super, or Great, or Fantastic in their name, and all their "beauty school dropouts" cutting hair based on your 'clip size;' any monkey can give a haircut using a numbered clip, even to themselves.

I searched the internet for barbers in my area and found my current barber for the last 18 months. She has been a barber for over 30 years and in the same location for 22 years. By appointment only, she does give straight razor shaves, but due to regulations now, they must use the shavette with blades that can be replaced.

I guess I have lived a privileged life and didn't even realize it. I have always had a local corner barber shop that I have went to for a hair cut, no matter where I have lived. I guess that is the benefit of living in the south. They might not always shave your face but I at least I get my cut finished/edged with a straight. I much like everyone else who has posted do not like the big chains in everything. give me a local store and I will almost always go their over the national chain.

Just consider even experienced barbers probably haven't given straight shaves on a regular basis for over 40 years. People like that were trained in the 1950s or before so they are most likely pretty old. people you encounter in their 20s-50s probably picked it up on their own through practicing on their customers.

Finding a competent shaver who uses a blade period is very hard and our site is full of very bad experiences and very few good ones. Good luck.
