    Devilpup,

Welcome to SRP! You're a fortunate young man to embark on this adventure at a young age, unlike some of us who just discovered this in our 50's. You're also fortunate to have a cherished keepsake like your great grandfather's shaving mug.

You can't go wrong with a strop & razor set from SRD. Many of us started with a DOVO or a Boker. You notice I said "started" as once the addiction establishes itself you'll find you might consider taking on a part-time job to support your new "addiction".

Be sure to read through the WIKI - it will steer you in the right direction and make your transition to straight shaving much smoother.

Again, welcome aboard and smooth shaving!

    Greg

Aint nothing wrong with a Dovo, but know this, they come factory sharpened not shave ready. If you buy one from a shop that will hone it to shave readiness you will come out ahead.

You will not be disappointed with the dovo best and strop combo, that was my first razor and strop. They work very well and are a good starting place coming honed by Lynn and you get a free second honing as well.

    DevilPup,

I too recently started using a straight razaor - just about a month ago and this site has been a huge help! I always get a quick and helpful response and the resources are excellent!

I started with the Dovo strop and razor combo, just like the one you mentioned. Because it is coming from SRD, it has been honed and truly is ready to shave. But, because I know that I will eventually have to send it back to be honed again (which in case you didn't know, the first re-hone is free through SRD) I just bought the Edelweiss today. Actually, it was a birthday gift from my wife. That way, I won't have to go back to the 45 bladed Mach whatever.

Good luck and I suggest watching as many videos as possible on "how" to get it right. After I knew my razor was sharp I quickly figured out that when I had a less than BBS shave, it was operator error.

Welcome to SRP DevilPup since it has not been said yet and you mentioned that you are working on a budget Whippeddog.com is a good site to check out. You can get a vintage blade for 33 dollars and a strop kit for 19 dollars. The blade will not look pristen but it will be of good quality and be shave ready. The strop kit is nothing fancy ethier but gets the job done real well. Another option for a blade is to check the classifieds on here.

    Devilpup,

Welcome, I wish I had found straights at your age. You can't go wrong with the set up you mentioned, just make sure it is shave ready. Enjoy the journey.
