    Default And so it begins...

Much excitement this morning as my new Dovo finally arrived.

This was my first experience of even holding a straight razor; it's undoubtedly a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, although the blade seems huge, and it will clearly take a bit of practice before I feel less clumsy with it.

This afternoon, after a soak in the bath and an attempt at achieving a calm, zen-like state, I was ready to give it a try. The zen-like state evaporated pretty quickly once I was stood in front of the mirror and lining the Dovo up for approach, but once I'd got going the signs were encouraging. No chainsaw-massacre quantities of blood, and I was even getting a nice buttered-toast sound.

Not wanting to push my luck, I did the recommended one sideburn, and stopped for today.

Congrats! Sounds like you've done youre reading. Even after doing this for a while, I still feel amazed as i'm sure you do every time you finish, and feel that BBS, nothing compares to it. in a note though, although you have attempted and completed a great first shave (something to be very proud of) keep in mind, an off day can cut you up pretty bad... dont get discouraged, it happens to all of us. Nothing seems right, and then your face looks like you got beat up by a P.O'd cat. It happens. But, keep up the good work sounds like youre off to great start.

Welcome aboard! Sounds like things are going well. Something I'd suggest would be to go a few days w/o shaving to get an idea of your beard's growth patterns. This is very important since what you think may be WTG, could be XTG and so on.

    Welcome to your new obsession!

+1 to this. With the hairs a bit longer you'll have a better view for your angle of attack..that is of course if your lifestyle permits not shaving for a few days. And welcome to our world!

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Second attempt today felt a little more natural. Just did the one sideburn again. No blood either, although ironically I managed to nick myself while I was doing the rest of my face with the DE.

I'll try leaving the beard to grow for a few days. I have a week's holiday so can get away with looking like a bum.
