Its personal preference really. I tend to hang mine on the towel hooks on the back of the door which works well for me. I like having the strop nearer 45 degrees as this feels more natural to me.

If SWMBO or a friend doesnt mind holding the other end of the strop for you, you could experiment with different heights and find the one that feels best to you. Thats what I'd do anyways!

I do around 45 degrees also. Right now I have a carabiner (cheap utility one not a climbing rated one) on the end of mine that is clipped to the towel rack just inside the bathroom. The towel rack is screwed into the studs so I'm pretty sure I could hang from it should I need to, lol.

So this weekend I was thinking of finding a stud in the wall and putting a good hook in, and then hanging my strops from that. So my question is there a proper height to hang the strop. I figure this is going to let me get more tension on the strop, and beyond that it'll look more like it is supposed to be there.
+1 to it being a matter of personal preference. An easy way to determine what is more comfortable to you is to Tie a piece of string or something to the eye of the strop making a loop and have someone firmly hold a broom handle straight up and down. Slide the string loop over the end of the broom handle and try it at different heights. Measure what you find to be the best height and put your hook at that height.

I did the same thing where I screwed a hook into a stud on my bathroom wall. Even though I like to use the term "Tight & light" to describe stropping, it only means, taught enough to keep the strop from sagging and light pressure on the razor. A common mistake for beginners is to leave too much slack in the strop and/or using too much pressure on the razor and wind up rolling the edge of the razor. I speak from experience because I did it on my first razor. Just imagine looking at yourself stropping from the side. If you were to leave way too much slack in the strop, it would form a "V" with the blade being in the bottom of the "V". Now you can see where the razor's edge would want to try to conform to the shape of the "V" and how too much slack and/or too much pressure can actually roll the edge. The hook I have screwed into my wall has only a 3/16" shank. Where I have to stand, my strop is pulling at almost a 45 degree angle to the hook and I've never bent it. So no, you do not need to pull it that tight.

I hang it from the shelving in the linen closet, the height is a couple of inches above the waist, which is comfortable for me and the strop is hidden behind the door when I do not need it.
