Thread: Chromium Oxide?

Can you guys recommend a good place to buy CrO?
I wanna paste my felt strop to use for finishing.
I can't find anything good on ebay and hit and miss with some online stores.
Also I would prefer the bare Cro, not the Dovo paste.

I use the same stuff for buffing aluminum in my shop. I get it from Home Depot it is next to the buffing supplies. Comes in a green stick form.

ChrisL (a member here) used to sell packets of powdered chrome ox, although I'm not sure if he still does. He's not as active here as he used to be but it would be worth it to PM him and ask.

BTW It's good stuff.

I use to use the buffing compounds from hardware stores. My results weren't what I wanted from the overall shaving experience and I finally narrowed down to my CrOx. Got some stuff from SRD and it made a noticeable improvement.

Ibreakstuff may have gotten some good stuff. I paid top-dollar for a name-brand compound and found out it was crap for razors. There's a thread here somewhere about it. Anyways, it does great on knives! lol

My point is simply that your taking a gamble on it's purity if you buy from a hardware store. Pigment suppliers and places with razors in mind ought to be safe. SRD is quick, easy and run by locals to the board.

Be very careful. Due to impurities not all chrome ox is good for razors. IIRC the chrome sold at Lee Valley got the thumbs down for this very reason.

lol you beat me to it, man. I rest my case....

For felt, I like the spray better. For the back of leather or on your webbing or linen, the paste or crayon work well. The key is to use just a little. When you see green on what ever you're using, your done for around a dozen razors. Don't cake it on. I also only normally use 10 strokes with no pressure on the razor to refresh or finish after the hones.

Kremer Pigments sells 0.3 micron chromium oxide powder. It was mentioned above. some time back, I went to great lengths with their company, contacted their technical staff, got their technical sheet listing every imaginable characteristic and property.

Their chromium oxide is very consistent in grain size.

Can you use chromium paste on balsa too? Any preference between fabric (leather, linen, felt, etc) or balsa? Can the same results be achieved either way?
