Thread: Would this be a decent first razor?

Hi there! I am new here.

I do not have any experience with straigth razors yet. Hopefully, that will change in the near future. All information i have got so far, i have got from srp.

First thing i need is obviously a decent razor. I do not want to spend a fortune and therefore a used one will do it for me.

To me, this Dovo razor seems fine: DOVO STRAIGHT RAZOR - SHAVE READY on eBay (end time 30-Dec-10 18:01:20 GMT)
it is honed, shave ready and sterilised.

Is my judgment correct or do i have overlooked some detail?

Welcome aboard! I've only been here about 6 weeks, but have picked up quite a few tidbits. I got my SR, a Joseph Rodgers 5/8 square tip, through the Classifieds here on SRP. It ran me $50 and works like a charm. You might want to look there, as the prices are reasonable, it arrives shave ready so all you may need to do is a few passes over the strop, and you're supporting fellow SRP members. You'll also need a few other items: a strop (canvas or linen and leather), a quality brush (preferably badger), a good soap or cream (Truefitt and Hill, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Proraso, Art of Shaving are all good choices), and a styptic pencil or styptic powder...you WILL need it! Classicshaving.com is a good place to look for your accessories. I believe if you "like" them on Facebook, they will send you a discount code.

Thanks for the quick reply. As I am based in th UK i would rather buy something where i can avoid major shipping costs. The classifieds therefore less interesting to me.

I wouldn't count out the classified just yet, many of our members are form the UK like yourself. Many experienced razors may even help u out with a starter razor, or a place to look near you. It worth the look. There's enOugh knowledge around here to get you what u need at a good price. That's why were here.

That looks like a decent razor. You never know with ebay whether or not it will truly be shave ready, but that guy sounds legit.

The classifieds is your best bet. But, that's probably an ok risk in that case because if it's not really shave ready, I know a guy who I guarantee will be happy to hone it for free in the UK for you.

If not him, I'll be happy to do it for you, but it would just take a little while with shipping to and from the US. I'm a big fan of Dovo Best Quality razors for beginners. Welcome to SRP.

Wow, thanks for the last two replies! I was already in doubt if a straigth razor was really the way to gi for me (thinking about a DE) but now i feel encouraged again. I will bid on the above posted one.

You may aswell buy a known shave ready straight - there's no guarantee this is shave ready, besides the seller has little feedback. I'd check out Introduction to razors (when it is open after New year) and strop-shop.co.uk.

These are both reputable vendors who put a superb edge on razors, new and vintage. I can attest. I'd also check out the classifieds for a bargain vintage straight that is shave ready.

That one off the bay could be great, but why risk it when it comes to your face? 'Shave ready' is a subjective term, and as far as I know, there are some sellers on ebay who use it as a marketing puff when the razor is not shave ready at all.
