Thread: Need honing help in NC

I have always believed that you can read something and watch a video a million times, but it never really makes a lick of difference. I am new to this straight razor shave thing, and have always wanted to get into it. Does anyone know of a place that hones razors near Jacksonville North Carolina? I need to see it done, and maybe have someone point out the errors in my way. Often times i end up making a simple mistake and just don't realize that it's being done wrong. Anyone got any new pointers?

Welcome to SRP. If you go to this link here you'll find the member's map. I know we've got a slue of members in NC but not sure if one adept at honing is in the J-ville area. Maybe someone in your area who is adept at honing will pick up on it. In the meanwhile for some of us the tutorials, videos and practice on our own is the only game in town.

Well I am in Jacksonville but I have no hones or honing experience......yet.

I am still pondering what stone to get first besides a DMT 325 to start on the one stone method Gssixgun and Lynn have been working on lately.

A Norton 4/8 combo would give you a little more bang for the buck than one stone. A bit more versatility and you could do the pyramid method alternatively. Just IMHO.

I have a Norton 4000/1000. I can get it close, but I am not able to get it sharp enough. I'm just looking for help getting it over the edge. Any recommendations?

In the SRP Wiki these two pyramid methods worked for me and many others.

Try this 'alternative approaches here first and if that doesn't work for you go to the more aggressive method (more strokes) here.

These presuppose the bevel is set with a 1k. You can do it with a 4k and the circle method shown by Lynn and Glen in these videos here are a way to go about it.

Maybe someone in your area will notice your post requesting help and step up to the plate. Other than that you'll have to take advantage of the resources provided.
