Thread: Looking For First SR

I've decided since there is such a huge selection of vintage razors I wouldn't go brand new. The problem is there is such a huge selection I'm not sure what to get. Could someone please give me a list of good quality brands to look out for. Much appreciated

Check out the SRP classifieds for razors. There are many brands of excellent razors, and the members won't steer you wrong.

Holli4Pirating has a nice page with lots of great razors that are shave ready. Check his posts out.

Don't get too hung up on brand name to start off. I have a few of the name brands, but my best shaver is a brand I've never heard of "Magnetic 55". Just go with something on the classifieds, you get get a decent 6/8" for under $60

If you're looking at vintage razors I can't really think of one "bad" razor. It seems the junk started in very recent times. Just go with the guys on the classifieds or our vendors and you'll do OK.

Might want to consider a custom built if you want something a bit different, depends on your budget. Might be a bit of a wait though.
If bucks are in short supply go for an e bay vintage, any Sheffield, boker, dovo, TI etc. You won't go far wrong.
Just be sure to get it professionally honed.

If you go the Ebay route as Deckard suggests I can recommend the seller thedemonbarber2010 - I've had 2 top notch vintage razors (a Hibbard Spencer Bartlett and a Fram), properly prepared, from him at a very good price.

I looked at the wiki on razors, here, and searched those brands on ebay. The blades/ads I bid on included lots of clear pictures. Look at the straightness of the blade. My first bid was on a Wade and Butcher, and when I got it, it was "smiling," so not good to shave with. My next razor was a dubl duck gold edge, and it is awesome. I also made sure the feedback on the sellers was high, and that they frequently sold razors or had several razors for sale.

Just my $.02...I would consider looking at the Classifieds section of SRP. There are certainly some honest sellers on ebay, and I have purchased some great razors from them. However, for a first razor, the SRP Classifieds give you a little more assurance that you are buying from a known person who is selling an honest product. Again, there are some great ebay sellers, but there are also some folks trying to make a buck off of someone who does not know what to look for. Good luck with whatever you decide, and welcome!

Smiling blades can be good shavers.
Way to go on the gold edge, a lovely shaver.
