So far in my quest for SR knowledge, this has been the best site by far. A little about why I'm here.

A week ago, my Dad gave me my great grandfather's razor, a Friedman & Lauterjung 'Electric' with buffalo horn scales. It's in rough shape, but looked to be reparable with some TLC so I took it to a local cutlery shop (Heimerdinger's) that has been around for around 150 years and they said it could be restored pretty well as the blade was worn, but the edge was clean.

Since then, I purchased a red Dovo Bismarck off Amazon through 'RoyalShave' (thanks to AMEX points it's basically free,) but it has yet to arrive. Depending on the wait at the local shop, I may be sending it off to VintageBlades to get it honed.

My reasoning for the switch? Too many to list, but the fact that I like to do things a bit different and value effort, craftsmanship and 'job well done' are the main factors. Also, using a vintage family razor from time-to-time makes me feel a little more in tune with my heritage.

I should be getting my maternal grandfather's blade soon and plan on restoring it as well. I'll let you know the details and will have some pics in the future of all my 'cuttin' sticks.'

Double check about the honing from the Amazon/Royal Shave. Some of these merchants actually do pro-hone the razor before shipping. I don't know if RS does, but their website would give you the answer.

How fast is fast?

Got my razor today and they were super fast. Blade looks good and is very sharp, may not have been pro-honed.

One thing I've noticed is these things are much easier to hold/handle than they look like when watching someone else shave. It always sounded a little risky, but now that I've shaved once with it, it's not hard at all... just have to learn the progression and all should be fine.

The Bismarck is one good looking piece and I love the full length hollow this thing has.
