Thread: may have done something dumb already...

Hey all!

So I thought I'd learn to shave properly, but I've bought my first razor (2 arrived :S) off Ebay...

It was a bargain and they're pitched as new, but do you think it's a good idea to get them checked over by an expert before committing them to my face?

What brand are the razors? That is really the thing that would tell if they're any good. At the very least, assuming they are good razors, you will need to send them to a pro for honing. You can find a list of people who offer honing under "Member Services" in the classifieds here.

Hi,Welcome to SRP m8te. Yes,definantly have 'em looked over. Check the Wiki section.There is a list of good brand names to look out for and also a list for the bad ones.There are lots of skilled Honemasters here who can get your blades shave ready as well. Never assume your blades are shave ready,especially off of E-bay unless the rep of the seller can be verified. It's just good ol common sense eh . Otherwise good luck,it only gets better and better .

The sad thing is I bought the things based on the guy having feedback most people would kill for!

The only "inexpensive" razors that will even hold an edge are the Chinese "Gold Dollar", and these are well, poor quality. If you wish to enter Straight Razor shaving on a budget, look in the classifieds here for a vintage that is shave ready and you cannot do too wrong.

I see loads of junk on eBay from high feedback members. I too was taken and bought a "Timber Rattler" as one of my first razors. Pure junk and I tossed it into the bin.

Check out Straight Razor Designs,They have awesome deals and it's a very good starting point. Have fun and don't beat yer self up too much. We've all made our share of mistakes.

+1. You can also check with Kenrup. He sells great starter kits as well. Additionally, check the classifieds. There really nice razors at attractive prices. You won't be getting junk. Our members have reputations to protect! Although eBay has its place and you can get some great buys on straights, the truth is that you really need to know what you are doing in order to make it payoff. That bargain can quickly become quite expensive...

Hey you're from IOM. I've always liked to visit there and see the races. The last real RR races there is in the world.
